WHAT A LIFE ITS BEEN…

Fifty years ago, I heard my shutter click for thee first time. I was in love. My feelings were so strong that I had to pursue it with all I had. In 1978, one of the finest photography programs is the country was at, what was then, East Texas State University. As a student, I participated in four major photo projects. Won some awards and upon graduation, I joined the photography staff at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. For thirteen years, I recorded surgical procedures and research projects. Being a photographer on the state payroll had its perks. Assignments included visiting dignitaries from around the world, governors (including Clinton) and my favorite assignment, the Arkansas Razorbacks. In ‘94, my wife, Karen and I hit the road in a motorhome. The next five years proved to be pivotal in my profession. We planned our schedule to coincide with the seasons and the prospects of finding new photo opps. America is rich in opps! But, in 99’ my life was to undergo the most dramatic change yet. That’s when my Lord came calling. He made it clear. I was to take my life into the ministry. In June, I became the missionary and later pastor of a small Baptist church in Arizona. Perfect, I could serve God and take photos in a very beautiful state. In 2017, it was time to step down and retire. Even though my days in the ministry had come to an end, the days as a photographer were taking on new form and meaning. We were off to Virginia, we were minutes away from D.C. and the coast. Nice. Then we moved back to our beloved Arkansas, which really is one of the most beautiful and diverse states in America. We traveled to Hawaii, on three vacations. The Caribbean on another. All the while, living on a beautiful lake in northwest Arkansas. Finally, we came home to Colorado Springs, just last year. I sure am glad they invented the digital camera.

Colorado’s Gold Rush

A/003

Victor Mines, Colorado

The 1890’s were explosive for Colorado. The search for gold would see over 100,000 men, women and children come to the slopes with the hopes of striking it rich. Nearby this mine, miners have resumed this endeavor, not by digging shafts but by removing the mountain.

God’s Garden

Garden of the Gods

A/005

Officially, it is the “Garden of the Gods.” I believe in the one and only God of all mankind, and I believe He created this incredible place. So, to me, this is simply God’s Garden — a place where it feels as if He spent a little extra time, shaping every rock and vista in a way that mere words can hardly describe.

Price starts at $95.

“One of the 8th Wonders of Arizona” Watson Lake

A/006

Prescott, Arizona

The Granite Dells lie just north of Prescott, Arizona, and Watson Lake sits at the very heart of this striking landscape. Its water is unusually clear and often perfectly still, reflecting the rocky formations around it. And although a sign plainly reads “No Swimming,” the lake’s beauty and calm are irresistible to many who come to linger at its shores.

A Different Kind of Gold

A/008

Eleven-Mile Canyon, Colorado

Seasons come and seasons go. But, in the Rockies, along with the crisp, cool air of fall comes the rich gold of the apsen. Sometimes it blankets an entire mountain and other times it’s just a small nugget that lights up a Colorado landscape.

Those Were The Days

The promise of finding gold drew thousands into the mountains. Even those who struck it rich often squandered their money in bars and brothels; the man who struck it first, died broke.

Alone in Red

Washington D.C.

A/017

I remember very well this cold, dreary day. Even Old Betsy didn’t want to come out of her case at first. One moment the Washington Monument stood clear, and the next moment it simply vanished into the thick fog. Timing was critical. It felt like an eternity, waiting for every element to slowly be revealed: the monument, the flag, the fountain, and the lone subject in red… Old Betsy’s ears finally perked up, and she captured one of my favorite photos.
